Public Education and Outreach

The first Minimum Control Measure (MCM) requirement of the Blawnox Borough general stormwater permit is Public Education and Outreach. One of the most important steps in improving water quality both locally and regionally is by educating the public on common everyday activities that cause stormwater pollution. It is possible to reduce or prevent stormwater pollution by increasing public awareness and encouraging a change in how the public handles different activities like lawn maintenance, automotive maintenance and washing, and other urban housekeeping. Having an informed and knowledgeable community is crucial to the success of a stormwater management program overall.

What are some ways Blawnox Borough has worked to educate the public?

  • Stenciling our Storm drains -- The Borough's Public Works department went out and stenciled the storm drains with messages that said Dump No Waste, Drains to the River.
  • Stormwater Activity Book -- Blawnox created a Stormwater Activity Book for the children of the Borough to have fun learning about stormwater.
  • Newsletter Blurbs -- Be sure to always check your newsletter for blurbs about stormwater.
  • Coloring Contest -- The Borough held a coloring contest for kids with a stormwater themed coloring page. The contest was not a one time thing so look for it to be held again in the near future.
  • Book Donation -- Blawnox Borough donated a copy of the book All The Way to the Ocean by Joel Harper to each of the Elementary School libraries and to the Cooper Siegel Community Library.
